LOOKING BACKWARDS

Are we frightened to be caught
Looking backwards? Not all the time
But even once or twice? Won't we read
One or two of the poems
Someone of us wrote?
Won't we follow a line
Someone of us dreamt and drew?
Honor, however briefly, the thought and effort?
Is this the fate we want for our other art?
Your music, that I cannot hear?

When friends depart from one another
They say farewell. Why should our work
Be LESS civilized?
In the beginning we said - no constraints
To enter EPF or leave, whenever,
Whatever
But still . . .

Elias Canetti, in "The Burdens of Flies"
